About

Program Overview
North Mississippi Rural Legal Services (NMRLS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit civil legal aid organization. Founded in 1966 out of the University of Mississippi School of Law, NMRLS provides free civil legal representation, advocacy, and education to vulnerable residents across 39 northern Mississippi counties. Core services include:

Family Law & Safety: Legal representation for victims of domestic violence, protective orders, child custody, and guardianships.
Housing & Land Rights: Assistance with foreclosure prevention, eviction defense, landlord-tenant disputes, and specialized heirs' property preservation.
Elder Law & Scam Prevention: Free estate planning (wills, powers of attorney, advanced healthcare directives) and legal protection against financial fraud for seniors.
Economic Security & Consumer Protection: Guidance on bankruptcy, public benefit disputes (Medicaid, SNAP, Social Security), and consumer debt defense.

Free — All legal advice, consultations, document preparation, and court representation provided by NMRLS attorneys are 100% free of charge for qualifying clients.

Who is eligible

Low-income individuals, families living at or below 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, senior citizens aged 60 and older (income limits waived for certain senior programs), and victims of domestic abuse.
